How Many Earthquakes Happen Every Day?
The USGS locates about 20,000 earthquakes around the world each year, roughly 55 a day. Most are too small to feel. The list above includes every size the USGS reports, which is why the number climbs so fast.
Why the Quake You Felt May Not Be Listed
Outside the United States, the USGS mainly reports quakes of magnitude 4.5 and up. Smaller ones are recorded by national networks, such as Japan's or Europe's, and may take a few minutes to appear anywhere. If you felt shaking, you can report it to the USGS on its Did You Feel It? page. Your report helps map how strong the shaking was.
