Tornado Watch or Tornado Warning?
The two sound alike but mean very different things. A tornado watch means conditions are right for tornadoes to form in and near the area, so be ready to act. A tornado warning means a tornado has been seen or shows up on radar, and you should take shelter right away, in a basement or an inside room on the lowest floor, away from windows.
When Is Hurricane Season?
In the Atlantic, the season runs from June 1 to November 30, and in the eastern Pacific from May 15 to November 30, as set by the National Hurricane Center. Storms can still form outside those dates. In the western Pacific, typhoons can strike in any month. A tropical storm becomes a hurricane at 74 mph, and a Category 3 or stronger storm, from 111 mph, counts as a major hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.
Where to Go Next
Every tropical cyclone since 1950 has its own page in our list of hurricanes, typhoons and cyclones, ranked by strength and death toll. For tornadoes, see when and where tornadoes hit in the US, month by month and state by state.
