What Counts as Erupting
A volcano is listed as erupting when the Smithsonian's Global Volcanism Program records a continuing eruption, when one of the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centers (Tokyo, Washington, Toulouse) has issued an ash advisory for it, or when the weekly volcanic activity report notes new activity. A volcano is on alert when its national observatory has raised the alert level, in the United States, New Zealand or Japan, without a confirmed eruption.
Some Eruptions Never Seem to Stop
The Smithsonian counts an eruption from the day it starts to the day it ends, and some last for generations. Santa María in Guatemala has been building a lava dome since 1922, and Stromboli in Italy has been throwing up bursts of lava almost without pause since 1934. On the other end, about 35 new eruptions start every year on average since 1900, many of them short and remote.
