On 10 May 1974 at 19:25 UTC, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck People's Republic of China (Yunnan and Sichuan Provinces, Chao-T'Ung), at a depth of 11 km. It occurred on the Eurasian Plate, 99 km from its boundary with the Yangtze Plate (continental rift). It killed at least 20,000 people. It is the 22nd deadliest of the earthquakes recorded since 1900.
