    On 23 June 2001 at 20:33 UTC, a magnitude 8.4 earthquake struck Peru (Arequipa, Moquegua), at a depth of 33 km. It occurred on the Altiplano Plate, 120 km from its boundary with the Nazca Plate (subduction zone). It killed at least 103 people (including tsunami victims) and injured 2,713. 25,399 homes were destroyed. It is the 23rd most powerful of the earthquakes recorded since 1900.
