On 27 February 2010 at 06:34 UTC, a magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck Chile (Maule, Concepcion), at a depth of 22 km. It occurred on the South American Plate, 109 km from its boundary with the Nazca Plate (subduction zone). It killed at least 558 people (including tsunami victims) and injured 12,000. It is the 7th most powerful of the earthquakes recorded since 1900.
