Karymsky is one of the most active volcanoes in Kamchatka, with frequent explosions for decades.
In 1996 it erupted at the same time as a vent that opened beneath nearby Lake Karymsky, which suddenly threw out water and steam. The lake's acidity changed sharply and its fish disappeared.
