On 28 March 2005 at 16:09 UTC, a magnitude 8.6 earthquake struck Indonesia (Sumatera, Sw), at a depth of 30 km. It occurred on the Sunda Plate, 38 km from its boundary with the Burma Plate (continental rift). It killed at least 1,319 people (including tsunami victims) and injured 340. 300 homes were destroyed. It is the 14th most powerful of the earthquakes recorded since 1900.
