15 June 1991 · Stratovolcano · Philippines
On 15 June 1991, Pinatubo in Philippines erupted. The volcano rises to 1,486 m. Its Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) is 6 out of 8, that of a colossal eruption ejecting more than 10 km³ of material. It killed at least 800 people and injured 4. Most deaths were caused by pyroclastic flows and indirect effects (famine, disease), and to a lesser extent by lahars (volcanic mudflows). It is the 48th deadliest eruption recorded by NOAA. It is associated with a magnitude 5.5 earthquake.
