    On 17 August 1999 at 00:01 UTC, a tsunami formed near Kocaeli, Turkey. It was caused by a magnitude 7.6 earthquake. Waves reached up to 2.5 m high. It was observed at 26 locations. It killed at least 17,118 people and injured 50,000. It is the 12th deadliest of the tsunamis recorded since 1900.
