On 2 March 1933 at 17:31 UTC, a magnitude 8.4 earthquake struck Japan (Sanriku), at a depth of 15 km. It occurred on the Pacific Plate, 35 km from its boundary with the Okhotsk Plate (subduction zone). It killed at least 3,022 people. 6,000 homes were destroyed. It is the 72nd deadliest and the 22nd most powerful of the earthquakes recorded since 1900.
