On 11 March 2011 at 05:46 UTC, a magnitude 9.1 earthquake struck Japan (Honshu), at a depth of 29 km. It occurred on the Okhotsk Plate, 151 km from its boundary with the Pacific Plate (subduction zone). It killed at least 18,423 people (including tsunami victims) and injured 6,167. 123,661 homes were destroyed. It is the 25th deadliest and the 4th most powerful of the earthquakes recorded since 1900.
